Ostomy Care Guide

This guide provides general information to help you compare ostomy products and prepare questions for your healthcare professional.

Understanding pouching systems

One-piece systems

The pouch and skin barrier are combined in one unit. They can be simple to apply and discreet to wear, but the complete system is removed when changing the pouch.

Two-piece systems

The skin barrier and pouch are separate components. This can allow the pouch to be changed while the barrier remains in place. Confirm that both components are compatible before use.

Urostomy systems

Urostomy pouches are designed for urine drainage and may include features such as an outlet and anti-reflux construction. Use products specifically intended for urostomy care.

Before choosing a product

  • Identify your stoma type and measure it as directed by your clinician.
  • Check whether the barrier is cut-to-fit, pre-cut, flat, or convex.
  • Review pouch capacity, outlet style, wear time guidance, and accessory compatibility.
  • Consider skin condition, dexterity, activity, clothing, and daily routine.

When to seek professional help

Consult a qualified ostomy nurse or clinician for new or worsening skin damage, bleeding, pain, repeated leakage, significant changes in stoma appearance or output, fever, dehydration concerns, or uncertainty about product fit.
